Offhollywood Supplies Director James Lima With Latest RED Camera Gear for New LOVE Magazine Fashion Film

“THE LOVE THING” Unites Lima’s Leading Filmmaking Vision, Katie Grand’s High-Fashion Editorial Eye, and the Latest Technical Innovation From RED

NEW YORK — Feb. 14, 2010 — Leading digital cinema company Offhollywood today announced that it supplied the newly released RED Mysterium-X for the short high-fashion film “THE LOVE THING,” LOVE Magazine’s first commercial, designed and directed by James Lima at the invitation of LOVE Editor-in-Chief Katie Grand. Among the very first such systems yet available on the market, the RED ONE camera updated with the Mysterium-X sensor provided by Offhollywood brought unparalleled fidelity – with an enhanced level of sensitivity and broader dynamic range – to the shoot, which also features Lima's computer generated artistry and visually emotional storytelling. The film will debut on STYLE.COM on Valentine’s Day, Sunday, Feb. 14.

“I love telling visual stories using technology,” said Lima. “Fashion has always been a great inspiration to me, and now with the advent of new portable immersive devices, like the iPad, it only makes sense to take the Fashion Editorial art form to the next level. Still life comes alive with movement and emotion; it is very intimate and powerful. I call it ‘Motiontorial,’ and it has the potential in the fashion industry to be very similar to what happen in Hollywood with the introduction of sound to silent films.”

Shot in New York, the 60-second film stars models Alessandra Ambrosio, Pixie Geldof, Agyness Deyn, and cover star Jeneil Williams – all featured in the new issue of LOVE – wearing Prada clothing from past and present collections, and debuting the Prada pre-Fall 2010 Collection. Miuccia Prada introduced LOVE’s Grand to Lima, who directed the Prada film “Trembled Blossoms,” an ambitious and acclaimed CG animated fashion film, and has explored and exploited technology innovations – even creating entire visual worlds for the likes of Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, and Joe Pytka.

“The genius of this project is that all contributors represent the best of their field, and in this new frontier for the fashion industry, their worlds have aligned synergistically to create something really compelling and exciting,” said Quynh Mai, founder of Moving Image & Content, who brought Offhollywood on board for the film. “Among these contributors, Offhollywood brings the resources, technical expertise, and mind set necessary to support the creation of digital content at the highest possible quality. Unique in its ability to embrace the latest technologies without letting go of quality and craftsmanship, Offhollywood is an incredible resource for modern digital filmmakers.”

Offhollywood also provided additional RED camera support for Gregg Williams’ Esquire magazine cover shoots of Kate Beckinsale and Rachel Weisz, both shot on prototype RED ONE cameras upgraded with the Mysterium-X sensor.

TOE TO TOE is hitting theaters soon!

The big news at CES was 3D Blu-Ray. I wanted to know a bit more than all the articles that came up in Google - so I spent some time on the phone with Rob Aubey, Software Engineering - Blu-ray Technologies at Sony Creative Software Inc.

First, the new 3D Blu-Ray spec is full raster 1920 x 1080p. You will need a new, yet to be released Blu-ray player with HDMI 1.4 or ... an existing PS3 with a firmware update that will exist "around Summer 2010".

PS3 has HDMI 1.3, so this firmware update will actually take the HDMI up to 1.4 spec - or ... there's just some magic in the PS3 that the forthcoming firmware can hack to make it work with HDMI 1.3 - regardless - It's the only existing Blu-ray player that is getting a 3D update. You monitor MUST have HDMI 1.4 spec and be 240Hz refresh rate. Current 240Hz refresh rate monitors with HDMI 1.3 or 1.3a WILL NOT SUPPORT 3D BLU-RAY VIEWING. So if you are about to buy a new panel for your home ... hold off.

note: 240Hz is a "derived" specification since no content is currently produced at that "refresh" level - fine print generally says "capable of 240Hz" which implies a setting and matching source content.

note: PCs with DualLink DVI are capable to do 120Hz full HD 1080p@60fps per eye

HDMI 1.4 can handle 8.16Gbit/s and is capable to send 1080p@60fps per eye at 8bits per color or 10bits per color (can't do 16bits per color depth)

If you want 16bits per color then you should stick to no more than 1080p@30fps per eye.

Here's a summary of what's new in HDMI 1.4 - of key interest here is:

4K Resolution Support

The new specification enables HDMI devices to support extremely high HD resolutions, effectively four times the resolution of a 1080p device. Support for 4K allows the HDMI interface to transmit digital content at the same resolution as the state-of-the-art Digital Cinema systems used in many movie theaters.

The new 3D Blu-ray format uses active shutter 3D glasses estimated at approx. $100 - most likely many will be bundled with new 3D Blu-Ray ready monitors.

how does it display: Via the HDMI input- the Left and Right buffers are stored into memory, and inside the display it duplicates effectively the display refresh rate to 120Hz or 240Hz and sending the IR signal to the shutter glasses

How do you author and encode a 3D Blu-Ray disc? First you need to encode your left eye and right eye streams to MVC (Multi View Codec) codec - which is an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec. There is currently no encoding application available. Several folks are working on them.

Then you need an authoring application. The two high-end "studio grade" industry standards for Blu-Ray are Sonic's Scenarist® and Sony's Blu-print.

Rob informed me that the 3D update for Blu-print should actually be ready around NAB time - although ... there won't be any devices available to actually PLAY the 3D Blu-ray you encode. Such is life on the bleeding edge. Blu-print is a Windows based, software only solution that lists for $50,000 with a $10,000 annual support contract. Scenarist is priced similar. Yes ... it's a hell of lot more expensive than Adobe Encore, which can author and burn 2D Blu-ray discs.

I asked if Blu-print would be able to PLAY the authored 3D file via software and the answer was no. But it seems obvious that some folks will make a software player/decoder - and it would be easy to put line-by-line, side-by-side and DLP mesh modes into a software decode of stereo media - so one could play out to one of the current 3D displays (Hyundai, Miracube, JVC, etc.) that accept these modes and even play anaglyph 3D (red/cyan) to ANY monitor.

I'll keep updating this post as I get more intel. I plan to take a nice hard look at Blu-print at NAB.

Crossing my fingers that RED is going to have 3D support (and HDMI 1.4) in RedRay.

Now I'm going to start my personal campaign to get the Adobe folks to really consider BOTH MVC encoder support as well as 3D Blu-ray authoring support ...

3D test w/The Molecule

Last Sunday we shot a 3D camera test for a creature feature project with NYC VFX house The Molecule. Tom Sellitti, co-producer on FX Networks Rescue Me, called in some favors and pulled together a fantastic crew.

Chris Healer from The Molecule directed, Bill Coleman was the DP (camera operator on 49 episodes on The Sopranos) with John S.
We shot on the lighthouse ship "The Frying Pan" with an ET Quasar rig with two RED ONE cameras as well as a couple shots on the steadicam with an ET proto-type with SI-2K mini cameras. I'll post some frames after The Molecule supervises the color grade, but I'm super excited to see this footage with the 3D CGI creature.

The guys from MAXX Digital were kind enough to let me bang on the prototype for their new enclosure for the Red Rocket card. It's a realy amazing and empowering thing to play 4K R3D files in full quality in realtime with audio - from a laptop using RocketCine-X application.

Red Rocket i Transporter plugs into the express card slot and gives you dual link HD-SDI out. I shipped the unit off to Detroit - where our cameras are shooting the new Wesley Snipes film - where it will be used to screen dailies back at the hotel after wrap. I also tested it with a AJA HDSDI to HDMI converter to a 50" plasma and it worked fantastic.

Peter Majatan, who was involved in the development of the product, has also created a ruggedized enclosure with battery power that can been seen here - both products are slated to ship this month.

OFFHOLLYWOOD does Orange County Choppers
